Welcome—I’m so glad you’re here.
My name is Julia Van Daam, and I’m an artist and photographer living in Maine. Through my work, I explore the patterns, geometry, and quiet beauty found in the natural world. Under the name Mainedalas, I create artwork inspired by plants, landscapes, and the living systems that remind us we are part of something much larger than ourselves.
I created the Mainedalas Snail Mail Society because I believe meaningful things are often experienced slowly. In a world of endless scrolling and constant distraction, I wanted to create something you could hold in your hands—a small monthly ritual that invites you to pause, observe, and reconnect with the natural world.
Each month we'll explore a different plant, season, or theme through original artwork, reflections from my studio, and stories inspired by the landscapes that shape my work. Over time, I hope these mailings become a growing collection—a personal archive of art, observation, and wonder.
