I’m Kara Barlow, a writer, artist, storyteller, wife, mother, spiritual healer who 'must' have a flower farm one day!
I created Channeling Persephone from my love of mythology, spirituality, storytelling, and the quiet ways art can help us understand ourselves. The story was inspired by my own twin flame healing journey with my now husband. So much healing and transmutation of trauma had to happen on both sides for us to come together in such a beautiful, intimate way.
Through our healing journey I recognized so many parallels with divine masculine and feminine teachings in the story of Hades and Persephone. Hades was described as a kind, integritous, high moral code, regal god with a dark beard, and If you saw my husband, you'd see why I said, 'hey, that reminds me of Ty!',
I love this myth and have recreated my own version of their story from what happens when we look at it again through the lens of sovereignty, healing, sacred cycles, feminine and masculine energy, and becoming.
Much of my work is inspired by one simple idea: nothing living is meant to remain stagnant. We are meant to grow, flow, heal, and bloom, as well as have seasons of rest and reflection.
Through hand-painted art, letters, ritual, and reimagined mythology, I explore what it means to descend into our own underworlds, meet what waits for us there, and return more fully ourselves.
I’m not interested in pretending that growth is always beautiful. Sometimes it looks like grief. Sometimes boundaries. Sometimes rage. Sometimes rest. Sometimes becoming unavailable to the version of yourself everyone else was comfortable with.
And sometimes, it looks like a tiny seed choosing to break open in the dark.
That is the heart of Channeling Persephone.
