Failed payments and card updates

What happens when a renewal payment fails, and how subscribers update their card.

When a payment fails at checkout

The subscription simply isn't created. The person sees "Payment failed" and can try again with another card.

When a renewal fails

On a cut-off date, a subscriber's card can be declined (expired, replaced, insufficient funds…). Then:

  • In Subscribers, their status shows Past due.
  • In that mailing's list (Mailings → Subscribers), their row shows Failed, and they're left out of the shipping list export. Don't send them that mailing unless the payment goes through.
  • Stripe retries the payment automatically over the following days. If a retry succeeds, their row switches to Paid and they're back in your shipping list.

Help them update their card

Subscribers update their card themselves:

  1. They click Manage your subscription at the bottom of any email from your club (or go to mailclubly.com/@your-club/manage).
  2. They sign in with their email (Stripe emails them a sign-in link).
  3. They update their payment method.

You can send them a message from your Messages tab to let them know. Once their card is updated, Stripe can collect the payment.

Good to know

  • A past-due subscriber still takes a seat in your club if you use a subscriber limit.
  • If you'd rather end the subscription, cancel it from Subscribers → Details.
